By now you’ve heard of the new stock market game, where a series of Redditors have figured out how to game the market and battle against hedge funds to make themselves a sweet pile of cash. I’m already seeing it on my FB feed, where some of my friends have made some serious bank by buying up shares of GameStop stock with apps like Robinhood and WeBull. Good for them.
I’m also seeing that these new stock market warriors have set their sights on the cinema chain AMC and the cell phone company Nokia. Heck, I almost expect them to go after Nextel or Bell Atlantic tomorrow.
But I’m now seeing one company that’s been on their radar.
BlackBerry.
For those of you who don’t read my blog on a regular basis, BlackBerry is my preferred cell phone. I appreciate the physical keyboard and the security the phone provides. It’s not a toy phone, it’s a business phone. And I’m still getting good mileage out of my four-year-old BlackBerry KEYone phone, so there’s that.
But right now some of these new stock marketors have brigaded into the Reddit community r/blackberry and are spamming it with stock tips like there’s no tomorrow. “HOLD” “HOLD HOLD HOLD” “BUY BUY BUY” and lots of pictures of rocket ships. “HOLD AND HOLD AND BUY AND HOLD AND BUY MORE ๐๐๐๐๐” Oh yeah, and the occasional, “HEY YOU GUYS STILL MAKE PHONES?”
Yeesh. I get it. It’s the new gambling.
But here’s what we need to do.
If you’re going to buy BlackBerry stock, which you are certainly entitled to do, at least have some understanding of what BlackBerry’s up to right now. They’re partnering with an American-based company, Onward Mobility, to produce a 5G, Android-based BlackBerry phone with a physical keyboard. All in time for 2021.
This is important to me. My KEYone is great, but it’s four years old and Verizon has already informed me that they will brick my phone halfway through next year. I need this new 5G phone.
And if you stock speculators mess with BlackBerry’s ability to produce this phone …
If Chuck doesn’t get his phone …
Then we gonna have a “come to Jesus” meeting over this.
I get it. This is the new way of making money. Of taking it to Wall Street and giving the bankers and hedge fund operators a taste of their own medicine. And I get it, they’re already freaking out over this.
Just make sure that whatever you do doesn’t turn into some mess where BlackBerry stock gets caught in the hands of Apple or some other company, and they suddenly swallow up BlackBerry into the void.
Go play with your GameStop stock. Man, these people are glomming on GameStop stock like GameStop just uncovered three million mint PS5’s and are selling them dirt cheap.
But play nice with BlackBerry. Understand that it’s a phone company and one of the top technology partners in IOT and in cyber-security.
Play nice. I want my 5G phone.
I mean it. Play nice.
A post I was definitely expecting!

There is the slight possibility that regulators and politicians will see the underlying flaw in investing laws that allows this sort of speculating nonsense and stop it. Unfortunately it is a slight possibility, since the problem has been there for decades and no one has bothered about it. I guess it’s okay when the “big guys” engage in this kind of stock price manipulation scheme; it’s only a problem when the “mob” does it.
