This is what I need. COVID vaccine freebies.

Before I start today’s blog, I need to recall an anecdote that sports commentator Jim Rome once said about Krispy Kreme donuts. He said that the first one in the box tastes like heaven, but by the time you’re eating the third one, it’s like blah.

That being said, Krispy Kreme is offering a waycool promotion for anyone who has recently received their COVID-19 vaccination.

Now this I can get behind. I don’t see any qualifiers or disclaimers on this – just show your vaccine card and get one glazed donut. Now I don’t know of it’s one donut per day, or one donut per store, or one donut per inoculation, but hey, that’s a nice perk.

So how about it, Capital District eateries? We don’t have a Krispy Kreme in this area any more, so why don’t you all step up to the plate?

Hey Stewarts – I think you should offer one free pint of ice cream if we bring our vaccination card. Philly Vanilla, Crumbs Along the Mohawk, I don’t care.

Hey Cumberland Farms – I think you should offer one free pre-wrapped sandwich, any size. You know, it’s important to keep that energy up after getting your shot.

Hey Price Chopper – I think you should provide an extra 15c on the Advantage Card for gasoline. 20c if it’s a two-shot vaccination like Pfizer and Moderna.

Hey local ice cream parlors like Snow Man, Kurver Kreme, Curry Freeze and Jim’s Tastee-Freez – would it really break the bank to offer a free upgrade from a small Boston Shake to a large one?

Hey local drive-in theaters – you keep doing what you do, you kept us entertained during the pandemic, we’ll come back and support you this year. No question.

Hey local butcheries like Primal, Fred the Butcher and Rolf’s Pork Store – I’ll take an extra half-pound of bacon on my next order, thank you very much. A couple of thick slices, that would be great.

Listen, I get it. It’s a donut. A simple, tasty donut. But it’s a step forward. If you can’t get convinced to receive your COVID-19 vaccination, then maybe we have to go to bribery. You know, like when you were a kid and your parents said, “If you behave on this trip, you’ll get ice cream when you get home.”

So consider this. I behaved. I got my first COVID-19 shot. Next one’s coming soon. So let’s treat this vaccination card like an AARP perk card and have all the merchants give out the perks!
