Last week, I blogged about my brand new Nixie clock with its glowing red-orange numbers and waycool aesthetics.
With that in mind … I started thinking about the intricate details that make every Nixie tube in that clock. How numbers that need more visual display are oriented into the front of the Nixie tube rather than at the back.
Trust me. I’m a nerd. I think about stuff like that.
And then I thought … that old-school wired illumination might look really nice as a macro photograph.
Of course, at the time, my nearest camera was my Google Pixel 6 Pro.
But a camera’s a camera …
Here’s what the number 3 looks like in that Nixie tube setup.

Okay. Let’s try this again, only this time turn off the overhead fluorescent lights so that they don’t show up as reflections in the top of the tube.

Yeah, that looks nice. I can work with this.
Now depending on whether I move forward with this, I could see a photo like this entered as an outside “dark horse” image in Competition Season 2023.
Because of course I could. 😀
