The Empire State Plaza fireworks, 2023 edition (in 3D)

Every year I try to find a new way to photograph the Empire State Plaza’s 4th of July fireworks celebration. I’ve shot it from the parking garage on Eagle Street, I’ve captured images from the roof of the Kenmore Hotel. North side of the Plaza? Got it South side of the Plaza? Got it. I’ve shot lenticular, I’ve shot high-definition, I’ve shot with my Nikon D70 and my Nikon D700 and a bunch of film gear. The only thing I haven’t done is try to sneak into the Corning Tower and shoot the photos from up there. That would be epic. It would also be highly illegal. We ain’t doing “highly illegal.” Nopes.

But I have a plan for this year’s show. And it involves my little Nikon Df 3D setup.

If I can get a good spot at the Empire State Plaza museum steps, then I can get the beautiful fireworks blooms AND capture people in the foreground. And if I can get one or two people who are trying to photograph the fireworks with their lit-up cell phones … all the better.

And not only did I get a good spot on the Empire State Plaza museum steps … I also ran into fellow blogger and all-around good guy Roger Green and his family (his daughter is singing with festival performer Sheila E.).

Okay, I’m ready. Time for the obligatory thumb’s-up selfie.

And then came an announcement.

Due to an incoming storm – with lightning – the fireworks will be postponed until the storm clears.

Yeah, I’m not dealing with lightning and storms. Nuh-uh.

I went back to my car and drove home. And yeah, just as I hit the highway … down came the rain, all lit up by sheet lightning. Mother Nature putting on her own fireworks show.

And by the time I got back to the Town and Village and decompressed a bit …

This notice came up on my Twitter feed.

Okay … so I have a decision. Do I try again Wednesday night for fireworks blooms … or do I skip the whole thing and wait for 2024?

You gotta help me on this, blog readers. Go for the booms or stay in my room? ๐Ÿ˜€
