K-Chuck Radio: Pass it on the left-hand side…

On my “Nightowl Radio Show” series, I often put together something called a “sample example,” where a chunk of one song can be heard in a second song. Well, in last week’s broadcast, I showed how one of the biggest worldwide hits of the early 1980’s was actually cobbled from the frame of THREE different reggae tracks. Which I will share here … so you can hear everything at once.

We’ll start with U-Roy.

Take a listen to the intro to this track “Rule the Nation.” Does it sound familiar?

We now go to another Jamaican singer, U Brown, who had a hit with the song “Gimme The Music.” And if you hear the refrain, you’re going to realize where we’re going here.

We’re now going to the reggae supergroup The Mighty Diamonds, who dominated the U.K. and Jamaican charts with their song “Pass the Kouche.” And in case you’re wondering what a “kouche” is, let me describe it in other terms. Ganja. Blunt. Spliff. Or, as Casey Kasem described it when explaining the song’s essence, “It stood for cooked marijuana.”

You’ve got the ingredients, now you blend them together, get five pre-teen kids from England to sing the song, and you’ve got the worldwide hit “Pass the Dutchie” by Musical Youth. Oh, and apparently a “Dutchie” is a cooking pot, probably used for cooking things other than kouche. But your mileage may vary.

Okay, now you’ve got “Pass The Dutchie” stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

You’re welcome. Thanks to K-Chuck Radio. ๐Ÿ˜€
