Last month, I created a super-ultra-wide composition photo by shooting a roll of B&W film in my Pentacon Six TL at the harness track, then switching to color film to photograph one of the races from start – to finish – to winner’s circle photo.

And I blogged about it … because, yeah, I did.
Eventually I framed up this artwork, which – shall we say – is plenty wide. And again, I blogged about doing so.
Now this would be a great entry for Altamont in 2026. But there’s just one problem, especially if I want to enter this image in any other competition.
THE COMPOSITION IS TOO DAMN WIDE.
Most of the other competitions I enter have a maximum size of 11×14. This picture spans nearly 40 inches unframed.
So I had to create a compressed version of the photo if I want it for Competition Season 2026. And as much as I wanted that additional “winner’s circle” photo, it had to go. I kept the start and the end of the race, trimmed off half the B&W frames, and created this “abbreviated version” for such competitions.
Take a look, let me know what you think.

I also adjusted some of the color balance on the composition and brought out more detail in the images.
So I’ll keep this one in the short pile for my other competitions, and save that ultrawide for Altamont and for anywhere else that an ultrawide photo will find acceptance.
Yeah. This will definitely work.
Seems more balanced to me, FWIW.
