Is this the Gumby & Pokey / Davey & Goliath crossover episode we never knew existed?

Children of the 1950’s will remember the great animated series Gumby, in which a green anthropomorphic clay figurine and his trusty clay horse Pokey go on surreal adventures in the stop-motion world. The show was immensely popular in its time, and would later get a revival in the 1990’s.

As for me, I was more partial to the other stop-motion animated program from the same studio, the religious TV series Davey and Goliath. You know, the one with the young boy and his talking dog, as they follow the word of the Lord throughout their stop-motion universe.

So … apparently in 1956, there was a Gumby episode in which Gumby and Pokey travel to distant planets, and each time they find the planets occupied by less than welcoming residents. Surprisingly, the first encounter seems to be with an out-of-character jerk that looks suspiciously like Davey Hansen. And the second encounter on another planet looks as if Gumby and Pokey have found Davey’s sister Sally Hansen.

Then they get to the third planet, whch turns into a nightmare-fueled encounter with a character screaming “My arpeggio! My arpeggio!!” and transforming into a wolf-demon.

Trust me. This encounter was not co-written by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

I should note that the Davey and Sally figures may have received modification when they appeared a few years later in the first Davey & Goliath episodes from the early 1960’s.

Here’s the episode, Gumby in The Small Planets, and if you have trouble sleeping afterwards …

You are warned.
