Recovery Room Redemption

It’s Sunday afternoon, the day after the Trivia Bowl.  In the past 24 hours, I’ve had no less than six people contact me, asking if I’m okay, if I’m on the side of a bridge or if I’m curled up in a ball for having lost the Trivia Bowl.

Make no mistake.  Losing Trivia Bowl is not a good feeling.  But the team that won it – Stop The Bus – earned it fair and square.  Besides, not only did Street Academy miss the question, but Lynch’s Mob – the other two-time Trivia Bowl champion and who was ahead of everybody in points – missed it as well.

But I needed some personal redemption.  I needed to finally exorcise some personal trivia demons, and one of them was a two-year-long nagging demon called the Recovery Room.

See, the day after Trivia Bowl was held, the various Recovery Sports Bar and Grille locations in the Capital District held a special pre-Super Bowl trivia tournament called Recovery Bowl II.  I decided to attend the new Recovery Room in Colonie and participate in the trivia game there.  I met up with host Steven Murray and picked up my answer slips.

Right off the bat, I nailed the first eight questions, and quickly put distance between myself and the other trivia teams.  I knew who the fifth President of the United States was (James Monroe), I knew the decade of release of the Dodge Caravan (1980’s), and I knew the city where Super Bowl III was contested (Miami).

As the second quarter progressed, I struck up a conversation with a couple of Pittsburgh Steelers fans – I could tell they were Steelers fans, they were rocking #86 Hines Ward and #7 Ben Roethlisberger jerseys, and they even had Terrible Towels to wave during the game.  At halftime, I had a very commanding lead – knowing the teams to give Green Bay and Pittsburgh their first Super Bowl victories (Kansas City and Minnesota), which earned me the first-half prize – a Darrelle Revis autographed football.  Since one of the Pittsburgh fans told me that one of their co-workers was a die-hard Jets fan, I gave them the football.  I mean, what was I going to do with a Jets football?  Go to the back yard and work on my long-distance spirals?

I kept piling on the points, and in the end, I finished 19 questions with a score of 132 points – more than twice the total of the second-place trivia squad.  What did this mean?  It meant that I was the champion at the Recovery Bowl at the Colonie location – which earned me a future private party for my friends and me, a prize that made up for my two-plus years of exile and voluntary boycott of Recovery Room trivia games.  Sure, I’ve played at Recovery Room locations in the past few weeks, but now it’s official.  After winning the Colonie Recovery Bowl, my boycott of Recovery Room trivia is now over.

All the trivia winners at the six Recovery Room locations had to answer one final trivia question, and the person with the closest answer would win four New York Giants tickets for the 2011-12 season, and limousine service from Albany to the stadium and back.

The question – “How many combined points did the Steelers and Packers score this season, counting regular season and the playoffs?”

I tried a couple of formulas, and came up with 605 points.

The answer was over 900 points, and the team at the Recovery Troy location won the tickets and the limo service.

But it doesn’t matter.  I have a free private party for myself and my compadres at the Recovery Room in Colonie.  And you know what?  That’s redemption in and among itself.

And after Saturday… I needed some serious redemption.
