It’s a beautiful song. It’s privacy and meditation in the pop music world. And there are so many different interpretations of the Gerry Goffin/Carole King ballad, that everybody can pick a favorite.
And on this edition of K-Chuck Radio, I want you to pick your favorite version of this song. I’ve listed five below – some you may recognize, some you may never have heard before. Let me know what you think of…
THE DRIFTERS
This is the third iteration of the Drifters – it’s not Clyde McPhatter and it’s not Ben E. King. Rudy Lewis is now the lead singer. His voice is just so peaceful and serene, it matches up with the lyrics of this song.
THE CRYAN’ SHAMES
This Chicago rock-pop band never broke through nationally, but they dominated radio stations throughout the Great Lakes region. And I really, really dig the tempo changes in this version.
THE NYLONS
Remember this 80’s a cappella group? I remember them. These guys had the ability to make you actually turn your radio UP. This is one of the sweetest versions of the song, IMHO.
DUSTY SPRINGFIELD
I’m not sure if she’s mixing up the lyrics in this song… but it’s Dusty Springfield. I don’t freakin’ care if she’s singing the lyrics backwards.
JAMES TAYLOR
Of course you know I had to include the James Taylor version of this song. I chose the studio version rather than the live version of this song, because this is the version I used to hear on the radio all the time.
So after you’ve heard all five versions of this song… which one do you like the most? Vote now in the poll below.
