First big news – the Albany Patroons documentary, which features interviews with former players, coaches and executives, will have its worldwide premier at the Palace Theater on Saturday, September 22. Proceeds from the premier screening are earmarked for the Capital District YMCA and the Siena Athletics program. Definitely a worthwhile event, and I’m so looking forward to seeing it.
I’m also monitoring how the Patroons alumni are doing in the TBT Basketball Tournament, and sure enough we had our first Patroons sighting last night, as Xavier Moon and Atlanta Dirty South took the win, 76-74, over the Purple and Black Kansas State alumni team.
The Dirty South trailed most of the night, but came back with a three-point walk-off dagger shot from Bernard Parks to get the victory. Atlanta Dirty South will now advance in the bracket, and face off Sunday at 4:30 pm against Ram Nation. While Parks led Atlanta Dirty South with 18 points – all of them 3-point bombs – Xavier Moon finished with 15 points, going 6-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-7 from the three-point stripe.
Jamario Moon was supposed to be on the Atlanta Dirty South team … but he’s gotten a nice offer of his own. Moon was signed to the 3-Headed Monsters squad of the BIG3 summer basketball league. Currently the Monsters are undefeated in the BIG3 standings, which can happen when your lineup includes former NBA stars Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and Reggie Evans. Oh yeah, they also have Kwame Brown on the Monsters, but the last time Kwame Brown was relevant was … um … little help …
As for other Patroons in the TBT Tournament, they will play their games Saturday, July 21, as Edwin Ubiles, EJ Gallup and DeAndre Thomas will help their teams advance in the brackets.
There’s also a change in the Patroons’ league. The NAPB has rebranded itself as “The Basketball League,” with the acronym TBL. More info on that as it arrives.
So in other words … just because the Patroons aren’t on the hardcourt … doesn’t mean there isn’t still awesome basketball news for the gold and kelly green crew!
