The Return of the Cemetery Photography Contest (and why I can’t enter it)

Many, many years ago, St. Agnes Cemetery would hold an annual photography contest, where photos that were taken on the cemetery grounds were displayed at a local location, and the best photos would receive ribbons and money.

This was fun.  In fact, in 2010 I actually won the contest with this photo.

Star Trails of St. Agnes Cemetery. Nikon D700, Kiev fisheye lens, several photos combined in star trail capture.

This year, the cemetery photography contest has resumed, and the subject scope is no longer limited to images shot at St. Agnes Cemetery.  Now photos are permitted at any of the 19 different cemeteries that make up the Albany Diocesan Cemeteries group.  Photographers may submit a maximum of two photos per entrant, and digital adjustments and enhancements are allowed.

I’m including the “Call for Art” prospectus at the bottom of this blog.

Now here’s the deal.  I am not able to enter this competition.

And before you start thinking, “Well, that’s not fair, why can’t Chuck enter the contest?”

It’s a very simple reason.  Those who are selected as judges may not enter photo competitions in which they would judge, it’s a major conflict of interest.

Yep.  In the immortal words of Shorty Long …

So get your cameras, practice good social distancing when photographing in the cemetery, and put together your best images.

And let’s go from there.

Albany Diocesan Cemeteries Photography Contest 2020
