I received the news this morning. My return to college radio has been approved for another semester.
Yep, the Nightowl Radio Show is back for the Spring 2021 broadcast year at Hamilton College’s WHCL-FM, 88.7, heard worldwide at whcl.org.
With one tiny adjustment.
The show previously aired at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. According to the new schedule, I’ve moved to 7:00 p.m. Eastern time, beginning February 19th. One hour earlier, so set your clocks like you would set Daylight Saving Time.
I’m good with this. I really am. I still retain my original Friday broadcast day, which replicates what I had from 1982 to 1985. It also makes room for more on-campus broadcasters, and really, so long as I’m not taking away an available timeslot from an undergraduate, I’m fine with this.
As I’ve said before, my return to WHCL has been an emotional godsend during this pandemic. I’ve charged through my record collection, pulling tracks from here and there, putting together a 60-minute broadcast every week. I’ve done theme weeks, I’m going to do more theme weeks. Heck, on nights that I can’t sleep, I’m twiddling around with Audacity to make new shows. How waycool is that?
I get it. I’m gushing like a fanboy. And I don’t care.
I do have to give many props to those who have helped me put this show together, heck, I can’t claim that this is a one-man broadcast. First off, much love to stand-up comedian Jaye McBride, who used her pen and ink talents to create my “chilling birdie” logo that you see on this page, and on the splash page of every Friday night blog playlist. And much thanks to local radio broadcaster Chip Ordway, who provided me my way-cool KHJ Los Angeles-style intro.
I also hired local on-air talent and trivia host Stephen Murray to create some audio impersonations, including this Sean Connery impersonation testimonial that I play between songs.
And of course, much thanks goes to Jonathan Mead and Peter Kelly and Zoe Krevlin and the crew at Hamilton College and WHCL itself. Seriously. This has been such a fun ride, and I hope it never ends.
Okay, no more gushing. I have another show to produce. And if you know me, you know I’m already at least two weeks ahead in my broadcast schedule. Trust me, ain’t no grass growing under these feet.
So tune in, new time, same day, 7:00 p.m. Friday nights, for the Nightowl Radio Show on 88.7, WHCL-FM, Clinton, New York. Heard right here at this link for worldwide streaming!
Whoa! There it is ma! My name up in pixels.
