One of the most captivating plotlines in All Elite Wrestling is the storyline involving wrestler “Timeless” Toni Storm (who currently uses a gimmick of a 1950’s-era movie star diva) and her protege, new signee Mariah May. From the start ,this plotline is everything you want in a wrestling storyline – great wrestling action, compelling story, and a true desire to see where the characters go from here.
And last night … the story went from red-hot to straight-up nuclear.
For those not in the know, Toni Storm has essentially guided Mariah May as a protege, including having May wrestle under Toni Storm’s old wardrobe and music entrance (Toni previously operated as a heavy metal rocker chick with Motley Crue-themed music), and Mariah May took this to a nice winning streak.
And now comes the big match. Mariah May is in the finals of the Owen Hart Tournament, a single-elimination competition to win not only a championship named after a true wrestling legend, but also to claim a title shot against the AEW Women’s Championship title holder – which, in this case, is currently “Timeless” Toni Storm.
But first, Mariah May has to get past last year’s Owen Hart Tournament champion, the incredibly powerful and charismatic Willow Nightingale. And through a powerful back-and-forth battle that showed off the amazing talent between two of AEW’s rising stars, Mariah May claimed the victory against Nightingale. The two wrestlers showed respect afterward, with Nightingale congratulating May on her victory, and then Toni Storm entered the ring to help celebrate.
And then … oh boy, this got totally nuclear. Mariah May grabbed the Owen Hart belt and smashed Toni Storm in the face with it. Then she whipped Storm with the belt, straight out of a 1960’s Russ Meyer flick. Toni Storm’s butler/valet, Luther, tried to interfere, and Mariah May sent him flying.
May later took a high-heeled shoe and used the pointed heel to bust Toni Storm’s forehead wide open, just like Bridget Fonda used in Single White Female. I mean, in terms of wrestling history, Toni was about two nicks away from cosplaying the Great Muta.
Then the officiating crew came in to try to break up the fight – and Mariah May knocked down the officials like they were bowling pins.
You have to see this. Mariah May just went from coquettish ingenue to violent, sadistic monster in nothing flat.
And the match is official. Mariah May will face Toni Storm for the AEW Women’s wrestling championship at the next AEW pay-per-view – ALL IN, the one in London England, at Wembley Stadium.
I’ll tell you this. Six months ago, I wouldn’t have been able to pick Mariah May out of a lineup of Stardom girls. Now, I want to order the pay-per-view and THIS BETTER BE THE MAIN EVENT.
Damn. Just straight-up damn.
