Last March, I captured a cute little picture of a squirrel who stole a bird seed cake. And of course, when I capture a shot like that, I have to blog about it.
Understand that cute little pictures of squirrels eating bird seed cakes can turn into an awesome image for a latch hook rug … yep, I’m making another latch hook rug … I decided to take that photo …

I then trimmed it down and added a little post-processing to make a picture like this stand out when created in latch hook style.

Damn. Looks like he cracked open an everything seed bagel and is eating to the point where he would test positive for bagel seeds.
So I then took this picture and imported it in leftsource.com, an online editing program that converts images into its corresponding pattern for a latch hook project. Leftsource.com also informs me as to the number and color of various yarns needed, along with their corresponding bar codes if I ordered from an online source or brand like Herrschner’s or Mary Maxim or Red Heart.
Trust me, I’ve done a few of these already. Latch hook rugs give a creator peace and tranquility while they create art.
I just have to finish this by around April 2027 or so if I want to enter it in Competition Season for next year. Right now I have two different latch hook rugs on display – one at Altamont that already earned a blue, and one at the NYS Fair that is currently in judging stage. So I know this concept works … I just have to finish it.
Rather than order a few bags of yarn from Herrschner’s and order more yarns when I run out, I ordered the entire run necessary to complete this project. Yep, big ol’ box of 44 different hued and trimmed yarn bags. And I still had to order bags of Paddy Green elsewhere because Herrschner’s was out of the product.
As of today, August 21, 2026, here’s how far I’ve gotten on the Ganef the Squirrel latch hook rug.

Doesn’t it look great? A squirrel who stole a bird seed cake – oh wait, you can’t see much here.
This is because for the best results on a latch hook rug project, you work from the bottom towards the top. That way, you don’t tangle your hook with another hooked strand, and you don’t miss any buried areas that don’t have strands. So with that in mind, all I have right now is the grass and ground cover. I don’t have the bird seed cake, and I don’t have Ganef the Squirrel.
Check back with me in a few weeks. 😀
I have a feeling this will make for a very nice project upon its completion.
You obviously don’t shy away from challenges. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
