And the Patroons return to the Championship Final!!

You know that feeling when your favorite team makes it through all the trials and tribulations of a regular season, and are now one game away from playing in the league championship?

Yeah.  That was the Albany Patroons last night.

The Patroons were one win away from reaching the championship series for the sixth time in franchise history.  All they had to do was get past the Raleigh Firebirds to achieve that goal.

Yeah, I’m not asking much. 😀

Now granted, the Patroons may not be on a sports fandom level as the New York Yankees or the Pittsburgh Steelers, but for me they’re my #2 fan favorite (behind the Steelers, because NOBODY gets in front of my Steelers).

But the Patroons have faced elimination before.  They were nearly eliminated from postseason contention after a double-overtime loss to Jamestown on the next-to-last weekend of the regular season.  And they were nearly eliminated from the playoffs after a come-from-ahead loss to Raleigh in Game 1 of the postseason round.

So I needed some personal motivation.  And I also needed some supporters who normally wouldn’t have said anything about the Patroons, or even knew what a Patroon was.  Other than being a Dutch settler who owned land in upstate New York.

So I made a little “insurance threat” on Facebook.  As a joke, mind you…

I told everyone that they had better support the Patroons Wednesday night … or come the weekend, I would spend every single moment posting Avengers spoilers and ticking off who gets slaughtered this Sunday on Game of Thrones.

Don’t tempt me.  I will tell you everything that happens with the Avengers.  Like that time when John Steed and Emma Peel used only an umbrella and a pair of thigh-high leather boots to stop the bad guys from taking over England…

Oh wait, you didn’t mean THOSE Avengers? 😀

Well, those secrets are safe … because Wednesday night, Shadell Millinghaus’ 33 points and 11 rebounds helped guide the Patroons to a 120-116 win over the Raleigh Firebirds.

Millinghaus’ 33 points came off of a pinpoint 18-for-18 free throw accuracy in 41 minutes of play. Darius Paul achieved a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Anthony Moe achieved his own double-double of 12 points and 10 boards.

Steven Cunningham (16), Joshua Cameron (16) and Jordan Robertson (14) also scored in double figures for Albany.

And the Patroons fly back to the championship series, where they will face the Yakima Sun Kings once again in a best-of-three matchup.

Which gives me a chance to dust off these old Patroons memes.  😀

Ah, those never grow old.

Albany now faces the Yakima Sun Kings for the TBL championship, in a rivalry that dates back to 1990, when both teams were in the Continental Basketball Association. Counting previous appearances in the CBA and NAPB, the Patroons and Sun Kings have faced each other in the postseason six times, with the Sun Kings holding a perfect 6-0 record against Albany, and winning their league championships in 2007 and in 2018.

This will be the Patroons’ sixth championship appearance, winning the CBA championships in 1984 and 1988, and reaching the CBA finals in 2007 and 2009, as well as the North American Premier Basketball League (currently TBL) in 2018.

Let’s do this.

No, seriously.  Let’s do this.

As I said before … you want to see a happy Chuck?

The Albany Patroons make me a happy Chuck.

Now let’s win this championship.

End of discussion.
