And the game begins. Iowa. The de facto start for my Competition Season 2019.
Yesterday, I mailed a package of four prints to Des Moines.
Last year, I claimed my first blue ribbon at the Iowa State Fair when my photo The AGFA Bridge Over Ansco Lake claimed silk in the “Anything Goes” category. That made me very happy.
But I can’t rest on last year’s ribbons.
Even though I haven’t shot very much in the past few months, I do want to put something in competition. So it’s two new entries and two heritage entries for Iowa. I am allowed four entries in the Iowa State Fair, and each entry must be in a different category or discipline.
The deadline for mailing in my entries is this Saturday, and I know I wouldn’t have enough time to get last-minute entries like 88 Minutes in Chinatown ready for this. So we may save that for next year.
So let’s start off with my four for Iowa 2019. And they include…
WASHINGTON COUNTY, 2:30 A.M.
First place at Altamont. First place at the Big E. First place in Durham. One of only three Chuck Miller photos to claim the “Triple Blue” (first place in three different competitions). Could this be my first-ever photo to claim FOUR different silks? I’m entering this in Category 23, “Places and Landscapes – Black and White.”
THE BRIDGE TO INFINITY
Remember this photo? From way back in my “Polar Panorama” years?
Why am I entering this picture?
In commemoration of the Fair’s 80th birthday, the special photography category this year is “It’s All About the 8’s,” in which the photo must have some representation of the number 8. And if you look carefully at this image, you can clearly see that the framework of the bridge – when composed in a polar panorama – does resemble an 8.
Therefore, it’s going into Category #11, “It’s All About the 8’s.”
I just hope I have this one right side up.
MITTSU NO YUKI
My first personal success with macro photography. Three tiny snowflakes on an old T-shirt. Can’t get any tighter than that, I s’pose… Again, here’s ah ope that this picture makes the cut.
And finally …
NEW SCOTLAND ROAD
Nothing like some pinks and teals from vintage color infrared film, would you say? This will go in the Iowa State Fair’s infrared category. Two years ago, one of my infrared pictures, the graveyard shot Farrell, made it to the walls of the Art Center. So maybe I can do it again if I try really, really hard.
If I can get these images through the door … who knows? There may be more and more. But we shall see how things progress … because Competition Season’s coming, and I don’t want there to be a mess.

Marcia and I moved back to Des Moines full-time this past winter, so we’ll be here for the Fair and can provide more timely reporting!
