For me, this began two years ago. During the Super Bowl.
I had no interest in watching the Patriots and the Eagles – there was no impetus for me to sit there and watch Tom Brady get another NFL championship, and the Eagles weren’t exactly my cup of tea either. But there was a new episode of Star Trek: Discovery on the CBS All Access channel, so …
I watched Star Trek: Discovery instead.
And I was fine with that.
Tonight, both Joe Biden and Donald Trump will have dueling “Town Hall” speeches. Both Town Halls will appear on different networks, the candidates for President won’t be able to respond to each other or to interrupt each other, and both will claim victory for their appearances.
But at the same time, the third season of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere.
Besides, why should I watch those two talk… when I can have an action scene like this one across my flatscreen?
Yeah. I’m good with this.
Besides, the true debate isn’t Biden versus Trump … it’s whether CBS can milk the Star Trek franchise for everything under the sun. In the past three years, we’ve had Star Trek: Discovery, along with Star Trek: Lower Decks (the cartoon), Star Trek: Short Treks (15-minute Star Trek episodes), and Star Trek: Picard (a return to watching Jean-Luc Picard, with cameos from the Next Generation crew).
And apparently that’s not enough, because we’re also getting Star Trek: Section 31 (the covert ops edition of the Star Trek universe), Star Trek: Brave New Worlds (essentially, a series based on the original series’ original pilot episode from 1966); possible new seasons of Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks, and talk about new Star Trek episodes centered around Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Captain Sisko and Star Trek: Voyager’s Captain Janeway. I’m starting to think their motto is “Set phasers to binge watch.”
Trust me, if this show had any more spinoffs in its catalog, it would have Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T as lead actors. Dang-dang…
Besides, if either Biden or Trump say anything noteworthy or cringeworthy, I’ll see it on the morning news on Friday. And I’m good with that.
Besides, I’m running out of new dramas that haven’t been shut down for the pandemic. So I’ll take what I can get at this point.
Besides, this might be a worthwhile theme for Thursday night, wouldn’t you say?
