If you’re ordering Girl Scout Cookies this year … may I recommend ordering from …

Yep, it’s that time once again. That time when you receive messages from your cousins and your co-workers and your FB friends who barely remember you on your birthday. And it usually goes along these lines – “My (daughter / niece / cousin / neighbor’s kid) is selling Girl Scout Cookies this year, how many boxes would you like to purchase?”

First off, let’s get a few things straight. There are only three decent Girl Scout Cookies in the whole batch. Samoas, Thin Mints and Lemon-Ups. Everything else is basic. And yeah, that includes the Trefoils and the Do-Si-Dos, and I meant what I said.

And the second thing. Why isn’t it the Girl Scouts themselves that are selling the cookies? Why is all the selling taking place with their parents and other adults? Are the adults going to earn the achievement awards for selling the cookies, or is this something that the Girl Scouts themselves must learn in terms of marketing and achievement?

But the final thing. You can order Girl Scout Cookies from any Girl Scout. Anywhere. Trust me, they’re shipped from all over. You’re not limited to buying the cookies from the kid down the street and hoping she delivers them at some point in time. You can order online, designate a troop or a Scout who sold the cookies to you, the order gets placed and shipped nationally, the kid / troop earns the kudos, all is right with the world.

So that being said, if you’re planning on ordering Girl Scout Cookies this year, may I recommend Girl Scout Troop 6000 in New York City. This is a unique Scout troop, in that these scouts live in shelters. Whether it’s homeless shelters or domestic violence shelters or protective custody shelters, these girls already have challenges ahead of them. Big challenges. And any support you can provide would be fantastic. Here’s a link to their ordering platform.

Or if you want to show your support for some Girl Scouts who have dreams far beyond those that you or I could achieve, may I introduce you to Erin Reed. Erin’s not a Girl Scout, but her Substack has a list of Trans Girl Scouts who are selling cookies this year. Take a look at this link, and decide if there’s any Scouts on that list who deserve your attention and your order of Tagalongs. Ms. Reed generates this list every year, and it’s a tremendously worthwhile and important service.

And in case you’re wondering – yes, I’m placing an order of cookies later today. I mean, do you think I’m going to make it through another freezing winter without at least ONE box of Lemon-Ups? 😀
